What Is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a branch that focuses on caring for children from infancy through the teenage years and patients of all ages with special needs. This treatment can include the prevention and treatment of diseases of the mouth, teeth, and gums and early intervention during the growth of teeth to prevent extensive problems in the future.

Our family dental practice in Las Vegas, Nevada, has a comfortable and relaxed vibe. Our caring and friendly team works hard to create a welcoming and compassionate atmosphere. We have years of experience in pediatric dentistry and working with children. The pediatric dental services we provide are:

Your child’s first visit to the dentist should be an enjoyable experience. Children are not born with a fear of the dentist, but they can adopt parents’ feelings towards dental appointments. We want both of you to feel comfortable, and at ease from the moment you arrive at our dental practice.

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children should visit the dentist before their first birthday. Your child’s newly erupted teeth must receive proper dental care and benefit from good oral health habits right from the beginning.

As new parents, we often overlook our infant’s oral care. New permanent teeth will replace baby teeth later in childhood, so why should it matter? It actually matters a lot.

Tooth decay can happen as soon as a child’s first tooth grows. Cavities in baby teeth increase the risk of corrosion in permanent teeth. If the decay is severe, it can have long-lasting effects on a child’s overall health and be quite expensive to fix.

How do I adopt healthy oral hygiene habits in my kids?

The best way to teach your children is by setting the right example. When you place a precedent for your children, they follow. Brush and floss with them to show them the correct way. They learn the importance of doing the same when they see you do it and enjoy the process altogether.

As your child’s teeth erupt, be sure to look for lines and discoloration caused by decay. Sugary foods and liquids attack a new tooth, so take care that your child brushes their teeth after each meal. Read here to learn more.

How do I prevent tooth decay in toddlers?

Tooth decay is caused by sugars left in your mouth that turn to acid, which breaks down the teeth. Children are at a higher risk for tooth decay because they do not practice regular, good oral hygiene habits. Daily brushing and flossing with regular dental health visits every six months help keep tooth decay at bay.

Other things to consider:

  • Teach your child to brush and floss morning and night
  • You are an example — take good care of your teeth and gums
  • Prevent prolonged contact with sugars
  • Limit the amount of juice
  • Introduce cups for drinking at age 12 months or earlier
  • Provide your older baby or toddler with nutritious foods

We recommend tooth sealants for the deep grooves in your child’s teeth to prevent decay from forming in hard-to-reach areas. Sealants can last for several years but are monitored at your child’s regular checkups. Follow this link to learn more.

What happens at a child’s first dentist appointment?

During your child’s first visit, we review your child’s medical and dental history, answer your questions, and address any concerns you might have.

This first exam allows us to evaluate growth and development, the position of the teeth, and the health of the gums and oral tissues, while also checking for tooth decay. If your child is old enough to tolerate it, a gentle polishing of the teeth to remove plaque and stains, as well as a fluoride treatment, is usually recommended.
